Botulinum Toxin A (BTA) injection is the treatment of choice for treating excessive sweating non-surgically. There are several available brands such as Botox® and Dysport®. Dysport® is the preferred choice due to a better diffusion capability. BTA is injected directly at the underarms or palms. It is a safe and effective treatment. Other treatment options include topical or oral medication. Most topical agents have limited effectiveness, and cause staining and skin irritation. Oral medications are not preferred due to bad side effects.
No. Excessive sweating is essentially due to over activity of the nervous system that controls the sweat gland. BTA merely ‘calms’ the nerves to reduce overproduction of the sweat thus the normal function of sweat glands is not affected.
